Gearbox has taken a decisive step in the evolution of its most popular franchise. Borderlands 4 not only aims to offer more intense shootouts and more ambitious scenarios, but also bets on a new procedural system that promises to change the way weapons are generated in the game.

The company, led by Randy Pitchford, has explained to Game Informer how this new approach will be driven by artificial intelligence. The goal: to assemble parts, materials, and attributes from multiple manufacturers to generate a virtually endless arsenal, while maintaining a strong identity for each playstyle.

Pitchford assures that this is the most sophisticated system they have designed in the series. In previous installments, each manufacturer imposed its seal clearly on the designs, functions, and effects of the weapons. Now, in Borderlands 4, the goal is to allow flexible combination of components, without losing the personality of each manufacturer.

Additionally, the game will introduce new fictional brands to further expand the possibilities of equipment. To the well-known names like Jakobs, Tediore, or Maliwan, three new manufacturers will be added: Detilus, Ripper, and Order, each with its own unique mechanics.

  • Detilus: allows changing the type of ammunition on the fly, transforming a weapon into another according to need (for example, switching from a rifle to a shotgun).

  • Ripper: fires automatically after a brief charge, generating constant damage in bursts.

  • Order: each shot must be loaded manually, but its power is lethal, especially in sniper rifles.

Borderlands 4 launches on September 12, 2025 on Xbox Series, PC, and other platforms. It can already be pre-ordered in several editions:

  • Standard (79.99€)

  • Deluxe Edition (109.99€) with cosmetic content and boosters

  • Ultimate Edition (129.99€) which includes the complete expansion pass

  • Collector’s Edition (249.99€) with Lilith figure, physical map, and exclusive content

The Ultimate Edition allows for early access from September 8. Gearbox promises that this fourth installment will mark a before and after in the saga, with a loot system that is more unpredictable, customizable, and technically ambitious than ever.
