The gifts we’ve been receiving week after week on the Epic Games Store for years have led many to wonder how Epic managed to maintain that pace of giveaways while keeping a profitable business model. The answer to the question was much simpler than we imagined: there isn’t a profitable business in the store, at least not yet.
The platform launched in December 2018 and has since experienced remarkable growth based on giveaways and some exclusives it has gained from several interesting productions. In terms of users, the store boasts over 160 million registered accounts, with 56 million remaining active every month.
A Light at the End of the Tunnel for the Epic Games Store Bet
While the user numbers are extremely high, the profits are not. For Epic, the losses of the Epic Games Store exceeded $450 million in two and a half years, according to a recently disclosed court document. In 2019, the loss was $181 million, $273 million in 2020, and the same number of losses is projected for this year.
As perseverance makes strength, Epic recently announced that they will continue to acquire more and better exclusive games over the next two years, so the rain of investments to keep gaining users doesn’t seem to have an immediate end. If the result favors them or not is something that only the future will decide; for now, it’s expected that the store will start generating some profit by 2023.
